“Jean or Hans, what a story!”
Accompanied by a guide, students explore the history of Alsace-Moselle through a storytelling-based visit centered on the life of Jean, aged 8 in 1939, whose destiny is disrupted by the war.
Following the annexation of Alsace and Moselle, the Nazi regime implements a policy of Germanisation and Nazification of the population. Schools and youth organizations become key instruments of this strategy.
Working in small groups, using excerpts from school textbooks, iconographic documents, archives, and testimonies, students discover that young people were a primary target of the regime, which sought to assert that Alsatians and Mosellans were fully part of the German community.
The visit lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and costs €85, in addition to individual admission fees, for groups of 15 to 35 people.
For groups of more than 35 people, a second guide will be assigned.
This visit is only available for French-speaking groups.
As part of a partnership with the Souvenir Français national organization, you can benefit from a special rate for your class: €6 per student instead of €8.
To take advantage of this offer, please contact the nearest local committee of the Souvenir Français:
https://le-souvenir-francais.fr/delegations-comites-en-france/
In addition to the visit, you can also book:
- a “Star Game” educational workshop (duration: 1h30)
- a “Nazi propaganda through posters” workshop (duration: 1h30)
Star Game
At the end of the visit “Jean or Hans, what a story!”, which explores Jean’s daily life and that of his family during the Second World War up to the construction of Europe, students take part in a quiz-style game in groups.
Working in teams, they answer questions about the visit as well as topics from history, geography, and civic education curricula. A fun way to experience and reflect on living together.
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes
Price: €85 (for up to 35 students), excluding room hire
This workshop is only available for French-speaking groups.
Nazi propaganda through posters
How can we read images to better understand our history?
This workshop offers an in-depth analysis of a poster that became a symbol of the Germanisation of Alsace in 1940.
Students examine the objects, symbols, and words used in order to understand both the explicit and implicit meanings of a document produced by a totalitarian regime and used to promote an ideology.
From its creation to its widespread distribution across Alsace, the study of the poster Hinaus mit dem welschen Plunder also provides insight into the history of annexed Alsace.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Price: €85 (for up to 35 students), excluding room hire
This workshop is only available for French-speaking groups.

Nazi cinema in Strasbourg: between “apolitical” entertainment and propaganda

How should we view Nazi cinema today as a whole, and more specifically its propaganda films?
This workshop aims to introduce students to Nazi cinema through short excerpts from fiction films shown in cinemas in annexed Strasbourg. It invites participants to analyze how the Nazi regime used cinema to indoctrinate the masses, while attempting to entertain, instruct, and seduce them.
Antisemitic imagery is also addressed in a concrete way through the viewing of excerpts from antisemitic films produced from 1940 onwards.
This workshop, also offered to German-speaking groups, provides an opportunity to approach the specific history of Alsace from a different perspective.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes
The Schirmeck-La Broque security camp: a forgotten camp

What do we really know about this re-education camp, often confused with the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp?
Using documents and testimonies, students—working in groups—explore the history of the camp, the daily lives of the detainees, the work commandos, and the site’s use after Liberation. These different approaches help them better understand the still little-known history of this camp.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes
This workshop is only available for French-speaking groups.
Alsatian destinies

Based on the intertwined destinies of six members of a family and supported by archival documents, students explore various lesser-known aspects of the history of Alsatians during the de facto annexation of the territory to the Third Reich in 1940, including:
- the extermination of people with mental illness
- the Nazification of schools and the education system
- Nazi youth organizations (Hitler Youth)
- the Reich Labour Service (RAD)
- the Auxiliary War Service (KHD)
- forced incorporation
- the Tambov prisoner-of-war camp
- Nazi cinema in Strasbourg
- resistance and the Nazi repressive system

This workshop is only available for French-speaking groups.
Investigating Alsatian youth in the Resistance

What do we really know about the lives, commitment, organization, and actions of young Alsatians who, from an early age, chose to oppose the Nazi regime? And how was their commitment sometimes recognized after their death?
Using a wide range of sources—including press articles, indictments from Nazi courts, archival documents, testimonies, rehabilitation trial records, and comic strips—students conduct a genuine historical investigation. They explore the paths and destinies of three groups of young Alsatian resistance fighters: La Main Noire, the Pur-Sang group, and the Front de la Jeunesse Alsacienne.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
This workshop is only available for French-speaking groups.
Tomorrow, I get involved in Europe

Working in groups and equipped with tablets, students actively engage with the Alsatian territory by developing a project in a chosen field—local or cross-border—which they must design, finance using European funds, and then present and defend in front of their peers.
They may also take part in volunteering in areas such as culture, the social economy, the environment, or sports, within European Union member states by responding to a call from the European Solidarity Corps (ESC), or participate in student exchanges between European universities (Erasmus+).
To learn how to create, innovate, and explore territories, students will use educational toolkits containing essential resources for developing projects and completing placements.
Whether acting as project leaders or volunteers on assignments, students will experience Europe firsthand.
